Safely arrived

Good Morning folks,
I have safely arrived to SF last night.
I left Haneda at Midnight so basically I didn't sleep a whole night and landed here in the evening.
I even stayed up until midnight and woke up at 7.

But how come am I so sleepy?
Hello jetlag, hello already-tired-20-something-year-old body.
I should go get the sunshine as much to adjust to the local time.

So my traveling companion(s, for today) told me this would be the last place before NY to get the good food I think.
So I will use my chance to do that.
You have no idea how much I missed kale and beets. haha!

I was hoping to update this blog as often as possible while on the road, but  wi-fi or even the reception might not be so good out there according to my friend so we will see.

I will try and let you know that I am safe when I can;)

Much love,
Yuki

in 24 hrs or so/ 24時間後にしゅっぱーつ!

We did the last rehearsal before my trip today at my house today.
Hooray for the acoustic piano!
And I had a nice dinner with my friend who is also going back to the US for the fall..
Life is all good.
My packing is somewhat done.

I will see you guys in NY in a week or so..

Love love love,
Yuki

Reunion/Fall gigs-NY-Tokyo-Hokkaido-then TOKYO!!

Hello my dear.

I can't believe I didin't write a thank-you post after LAH gig.
It went pretty well!
I think I can share some pics very soon.
But again, as always, thank you for your support and love.
Hope we will be back next summer:)
I love you, LAH and the Morito Beach!

So today, I spend almost all day with my former classmates who took voice lesson together and the teacher.
What an inspiring day.
We laughed like crazy.
None of us looked to have changed but I know we have grown.
It is such a blessing to have these ladies in my life.

And one of them actually became a professional piano tuner so she fixed my 7-year-long-abandoned piano. Boy, that must have been a tough gig for her!
I was just so moved to see her working so focused.
I could tell she really loves her job and takes pride in it.
She told me my piano actually is one of earlier model, which means its material is much stronger than the current models.
I had no idea about any of that.
Now I know I will treat this baby of mine like a princess.
She deserves it.
And I hope I will create many more tunes to come from here with her.

So, at the very bottom of this post is some fall gigs info.
Since I will write this post in JP too, I am putting it over there. Scroll it please!
I am just really grateful to have these opportunities.
Hope I will get to see many of you again in NY and meet new people in JP.

Much Love,
Yuki

closure/initiation

Today was my last day at this work in Lower East Side.
Good bye my LES!
I was happy that finally pokpok wing was open.
Although I rarely buy take out foods for my dinner as I love cooking, I had to try this.
Wings were very good.  And the people are very nice, which is most important.
The wall was funny and cute.

Anyway, all these past 9 years in NY, I have seen lots of come and go.
The older I get, the more aware I became of the importance of proper closures as much as neat initiation.
Maybe it is about not leaving bad karmas behind? Am I sounding too "new age" now? I don't know.
You hear "close one old door to open new one" often.
But you need to close the old one nicely to find the new "better" one.
When I was younger and more selfish, I have screwed up so many times when I have to move on from something, and I know I won't be able to make up for those mistakes.

But I did my best here, I hope.
Feeling rather grateful everyday.
Hope you all are enjoying every moments of your days too.

Lots of Love with garlic smelling breath,

Yuki

Mele Kalikimaka!

I danced for hula halau that I am a part of at this children' hospital on Monday.
It is always a big pleasure to perform in front of loving audience.
I could feel that the children's shiny smiles filled up the air.
And the strength and love of their parents are just so...so I don't know the word.
All I can say is I was very honored to be there.

I was gonna pick some Hawaiian Chirstmas songs to post here but instead, I am sharing Keali'i Reichel's Maunaleo, a song he dedicated to his mother.
After all, Christmas is a birthday of this wonderful guy, yes?
And bless all the mothers and children.

And for me, I just received a parcel from my mama:) Such a spoiled child I am always.

Mele Kalikimaka!
Much love (or should I say Aloha?),

Yuki

time capsule

I own an analogue single lens reflex camera.
However I rarely use him. Simple because I am a such a lazy butt so I never develop films even when I finish them.
Plus, digital cameras and jpg files are so much easier when it comes to uploading on my blog or the rest of the cyber spaces.

After I finished my gig last week, I have been cleaning and throwing old things out of my room like a maniac.
I guess it is like Japanese Oh-soji(literally it means "the big cleaning" in Japanese) that we do at the end of the year. Clean out the old energy to embrace what is coming.
Anyway, I found a finished film during the cleaning.
I vaguely remember what I have taken but I was curious to see what those pictures are.
So here there are.
It is so funny, they really look similar to what I take on my simple digital camera.
I guess my perspective is always the same (and the skills are equally simple) whether I use SLR or digital.

I found these pictures sort of like a time capsule.
I can't even remember exactly how long ago these were taken but all taken in my favorite places.
Hope you like them as well.

(By the way, developing a film is so expensive nowadays...Going out of fashion for the non-professional, ha? Sad, sad.)

dayoff! 休日!

I had a whole dayoff for the first time after these crazy past few weeks.
No work, no chore, no plan. Absolutely fabulous.
I went to Housing works on Houston to donate some clothes and finally check out The skin I live in by Pedro Almodovar at Sunshine Cinema.
The movie itself was great but not my favorite, but the idea of having time to watch a movie in the theater was so nice.
Also I was thrilled to find out that Rodrigo Garcia's new movie will be in theaters soon. It is featuring Glen Close and the theme is sung by Sinead O'conner. Isn't that amazing? I hope that I will have time to watch it in theaters then!

When I got home, I baked some cinnamon buns from scratch for the third time this winter and practiced some christmas dances for hula.
But at the end, I felt like something is missing and practiced the piano and worked on work-in-progress songs. I guess I am just a music addict.

Nice day off, ha?
And the bulbs that I bought  got this big now. it has been only 40 days since I planted them.
The fragrance of the flowers makes me giggle every morning.

Write to you soon!

Love,
Yuki

Dia:Beacon

Finally, my cold is leaving me. I am so happy to see you off, buddy. I won't miss you!
That means, I can finally sing without coughing.
I was writing songs a lot while I was sick, but still.
Health is so precious.

I have been longing to get away from NYC and now I feel better, I decided to go up to Beacon, up in the Hudson River.
It was my 3rd time there.
Since I don't know how to drive, a train trip is always great way for me to refresh my mind, enjoying scenery and such.

I did go to Dia:Beacon just to really feel that I came to Beacon, but I guess I don't get fascinated about it as much as I did for the first time around. It is definitely worth visiting though. It is just I am coming back too many times, I guess.

What I really love about this trip to Beacon is the view of the Hudson from the train.
It is just stunning, always. It really is pretty.
On my way today, when the train passed through crowded view of Harlem and Bronx and suddenly the river gets wider, everyone, even this middle aged gentleman who was talking loud on his cellphone, started looking out the window, beaming like children. That was really sweet.

When I used to live in Queens, my apartment then was right by the East River.
I used to go sit there whenever I felt sad or frustrated and it always calmed me.
Probably the water takes any of your feelings away with the flow.
And today's trip was particularly reminding me of this morning that I was at the East river, moaning for my loss.
Maybe without even realizing, I was looking for an opportunity to reflect then. To remind where I came from.

Anyway, I took a stroll in downtown after Dia. This is also my routine there.
Although it is so tiny (well, we don't compare to Manhattan), there is something about this town. It is just cute. And it is  filled with art galleries, which I don't dare to go in as I feel uneasy there.
Ate lunch and bought some craft made by a local artist and came back.

It was already getting dark on my way back as the thick snowy cloud started spreading all over.
The water on the river was a bit scary but still excited me very much.
Fear and excitement are surely siamese twins. Look at all these horror movies around this time of the year, right?

When I got back in the city, I was so surprised with all these noises and the crowded streets.
Oh well.
But it sure was a good day.

mother nature

It is thundering outside.
How gorgeous it is.
Turned off music and and I am listening to the mother nature.

Still coughing a bit but I am feeling much better.
I went to see Makana and Ms. Akiko Yano's show.
I got to greet both of them in person.
What a lucky bum I am.
And of course their shows were awesome and made me very humble.
Will I ever get to see what they see?
The guitar for Makana and the piano for Ms. Akiko was just like live animals.
The instruments come alive in their hands.
All I can say is I must practice and keep going.

Well, enjoy the lightning. Don't get hit by it.
Good night.

excitement is a good thing

Hi there,

Lately, I found myself saying "so busy" "so tired" repeatedly.
Not a good sign.
I desperately need a break.
It is funny. No one is asking me to hurry or pushing me but when I am too tired, I just start carrying pressure that I don't have to feel. Silly.
Gotta watch my pace more carefully.
And I think the Hudson is calling me. Gonna need to go to the upstate this month.
Maybe I will bring my bike too.

But I have quite a few things to look forward to this week.
Makana is gonna play @DROM  on Thursday. And Akiko Yano is singing at LPR next Tuesdsay.
They both gonna be amazing shows.
I am literally counting down on my calendar...

And the funny thing is even whenever I am dead tired, if I drag myself to go dance, listen to killing music or sing, I immediately start feeling good.
It is probably not just a physical exhaustion that I could simply sleep it off.
It is probably about reminding myself what I truly love and so I gotta give them to myself generously.

So if you find me dancing like a monkey or indulging music, smiling to myself, please excuse me.
Hope you stay warm  and healthy.

Love,
Yuki

Apartment right across a community garden on Avenue B.
If l live there, I could watch the garden from my window.
Oh well. I do live across a park! I almost forgot about it.
I might as well change the blogs' name to outdoor life from simple life.

Regarding March 20th and afterwards- Official Page is here.

Hello there, tis Yuki here.
This 3 days have been a lot for me.
A lot.
After I posted a little comment on Facebook, asking to join me for the benefit concert, I have received numerous responses from so many individuals.

I am overwhelmed but sincerely happy to know that there are so many people who share the same thoughts.
Thank you so much for reaching out.
We strongly believe that this cause cannot be finished with just a single concert.
We are going to continue supporting in any way we can.
So, I have created a separate blog for the concert and the future events.
And I name the project
'tiny hands' big love project"
http://tinyhandsbiglove.blogspot.com/

Thank you so much, I will see you on that page rest of the week.
Much love and gratitude,
Yuki

3/20- A benefit Concert for the Victims of the Quake and Tsunami in Japan

Before Anything, my sincere prayers go to the victims and those who are still in terror.
It is still early to call the end. But I truly hope the casualties remain minimum.

It is so hard for me to be away from homeland, not being able to do anything.
I have never hated to be distant from my home like this before.
When my grandparents passed away, it was hard, but I was sort of preparing inside over time for the day it would happen.  This is different.

I know there are not much I can do even if I were in Japan.
But at least I could have held hands of my loved ones.
I just can't do that from here or fly home now.
But it won't do any good to anyone if I keep pacing and panicking.
We, who are safe across the ocean and the continent, gotta eat, sleep, and be ready to do what we can do from here.

What we can do. There might not be much if I were by myself.
But my hands are all open to reach out and hold those invisible hands.
Gotta use them. Along with people who share the thoughts.

I was once told that I am a hypocrite, trying to do these things.
Maybe.
The words have hurt me more than I thought and made my courage paralyzed for a quite while.
I did not want to speak out what I felt or take a responsibility.
But I wanna do whatever we can do because after all, I still believe it is better than just sitting around, criticizing others and doing nothing.
If I could have another person, or 10 people, 20 people, and so on, what we can do will be much more.

That is why I decided to host a benefit concert on March 20th Sunday from 6-9pm.
It will be at The Living Room in Lower East Side.
We have not decided where the profit will go yet, but as soon as we have more information, that should be sorted out.
I am still in the middle of putting everything together, but I think I will be able to post more detailed info by the beginning of the next week. Any support would be truly appreciated.
Normally I do not ask this kind of thing here but if this entry somehow reaches your heart, please share it with as many people as you would like to.
I will give an update the next week.

Thank you so much.
Much much Love and sincere gratitude,
Yukiko Ishiwata

髪は女の命です we are our hair!

 Got haircut done.

I have been a faithful client to this fabulous hair designer Daichi for more than 5 years. He did my fair for the CD jacket and the latest photoshoot.
For someone who grew up in Japan, I know the level of the skill of Japanese hairdresser is definitely the finest in the world. Maybe its is just that Asians know how to tame Asians' hair. But oh well, they are wonderful.

I used to just hate my own hair.
It is so hard and thick like steel wool.
A lot of women including myself tend to want hair texture that they don't have.
Like a woman with silky soft hair want thick hair with volume.
Or a girl with curly hair get her hair straighten up.  Something like that.
But he is someone who can make you feel like, "okay, my hair maybe gorgeous." uhem. And I will stop my raving right here before he starts brushing somewhere;)
I always wanted to write about them but whenever I go, I feel so good afterwards and forget my original intention...Thank my brain for remembering for the first time!
By the way, if you would like check out their website, it is right here:)

Yuki and Cuties on March 6 Sunday @ Blue Owl

This Sunday is our performance at  Blue Owl.
We were there earlier this month for the event Blue Moon, which was quite beautiful.
I am so happy to be back there with fabulous band.
This is the very first time in these few years that I will be playing with a drummer.
It is funny if I come to think of it! And I am very excited:)
I will be singing my tunes as well as some standards and a french art song, which I don't do too often...
And Blue Owl's mixologist is marvelous...So many things to look forward on my end.
Hope on yours as well!

Love Ever After

The past weekend was beautiful.
I sung with fabulous musicians, had good drinks on both Sunday and Saturday.

But what made me really happy was the beautiful weather of the past Sunday.
Smelled the moisture of melting snow, sun was very warm.
On my way to the Central Library at Grand Army Plaza, I was just smiling all the way even though my boots were so wet. It was such a blessing day.

But at the library, I found another beauty which made me even happier.
They were installing a new exhibition for the main entrance and I saw all these pictures hanging up there.
And some of pictures just caught my eyes.
They were pictures of old couples embracing each other.
Some winking over their beloved shoulders.
Others holding each other still so passionately.
I was just stunned.

They reminded me of my grand parents who passed away a few years ago.
They were always together whenever they go.
They took some big secrets to their grave even though they were revealed after they were gone.
But they always keeps me thinking what a true love is.

Those pictures by Ms. Lauren Fleishman (Love Ever After) had the answer right there.

Yes yes,  infatuation or excitement could be fun. why not.
But what more can we ask when you have something that lasts the rest of your life?
When you have someone to grow old together.
All of those couples were just so beautiful.

If you are in NYC, please check out the exhibition. Definitely worth the visit.

And maybe, someday I will find somebody like my granny find my granpa yea?
Let me hope that way!

Foodies or NIght-outers? shows on this weekend

Finally Lunar calendar is ending 2010 too. What a relief that I am done with the year of tiger in many ways.
I think I am ready for 2011.

This weekend, I am singing at two different shows.
I am featuring Chihiro Shibayama on Cajon, JR Pinha on Cello and Shogo Samata on Piano/keyboard.

They are quite contrasting setting.

On Saturday, we will be at Cafe Vivaldi, a very old cafe in a heart of Greenwich Village.
Small but cozy. Nicely tuned Grand Piano and good foods.
And it is a free admission show.
Show starts at 6 pm sharp so join us before you go have a fun night  the city!

On Sunday, we are performing as a part of this event called Blue Moon.
The coordinator put the music, original foods and ambience together under the magical mood of Blue Moon. With admission $15, you will enjoy music by Yuki and Cuties and Robin's Egg Blue and Food.
I am baking something as well. Also I have to note Blue Owl, the venue's drinks are marvelous.

Hope see you at one of or both shows.  You might get sick of me? haha!

Stay warm and loving till then.
